Geesthacht (memorial)

Historical background

Description of commemoration

Entering the church grounds of the Lutheran parish of the Holy Saviour from Kirchenstieg street, just behind the white gate of the fence, we come across a memorial dedicated to the Roma and Sinti. The memorial is a stone slab in the form of a standing tombstone. The text which is engraved on it is in German.

In the upper part of the headstone, there is a cross, made of a metal tube, placed in the hole of the stone slab and there are four rays on the outside of the headstone. These rays, which are also the arms of the cross, are a way of mounting the cross in the hole of the stone slab.

The tube contains names and data on birth and death (if known) of 23 Gypsies from a multi-generational family living in Geesthacht. They were between 2 and 62 years old.
