Weil im Schönbuch (plaque)
Historical background
Eight Sinti from Weil im Schönbuch were murdered in KL Auschwitz. A plaque was placed at the side entrance to the parish church in Weilcommemorates to commemorate them.
Description of commemoration
The plaque is on the wall at the side entrance to the evangelical church of St. Martin, alongside 3 other commemorative plaques, dedicated to the victims of both world wars, and a memorial depicting a soldier holding a dead body (figures placed on a column). Both the plaques and the memorial are made of yellow sandstone.
The plaque dedicated to the Sinti is much smaller than the other three plaques, but maintained in the same style: the background with the inscription is recessed in relation to the slightly raised “frame” made from the same material. The “frame” is formed by a milled layer of stone, in the shape of a gable roof at the top with a large opening angle. The front part of the frame is additionally decorated with notches. The shape of the plaque dedicated to the Sinti is almost square.
The inscription is sandblasted and blackened. An old German font was used for the inscription.
