Inscriptions

Text in German:

September 1999.

Translation:

We do not want to forget about it! On September 1, 1939, the headquarters of the Wuppertal city police were moved to this location. In addition to the police prison, it also housed the secret police headquarters until 1945.

The Gestapo arrested, interrogated and battered those persecuted for political, religious, racist or ideological reasons. The victims were social democrats, communists, members of churches and other religious communities, Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals and foreign forced labourers. Many of them were sent to concentration camps from here.

In 1941-1944, the local Gestapo organised six mass transports. About 1,000 Jewish men, women and children from Wuppertal, Remscheid and Solingen and surrounding towns were deported to ghettos and extermination camps and murdered there.

The plaque that commemorates Paul Kreber:

Translation:

Paul Kreber – in the years 1940-1943 he worked as a detective in the criminal department of the police in Wuppertal. In the spring of 1943, risking his own life and that of his family, he protected several Sinti families from Wuppertal, saving them from deportation to Auschwitz – thus disobeying orders and allowing the persecuted to escape.

In 1988,  at the request of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma in Heidelberg, Paul Kreber was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

His extraordinary courage should serve all of us as a model of civil courage and humanity.
