Jagiełła – Niechciałki

Historical background

After the invasion of the Soviet Union, in the summer of 1941, the Germans built a camp for Soviet prisoners of war in Wólka Pełkińska (Jarosław County), where thousands of soldiers died or were killed. After the war, in the years 1947–1948, a cemetery was established in the village of Jagiełła (Niecheczekki hamlet), not far from the camp, where nearly 5,000 Soviet victims of the camp were buried, including Jews, Gypsies, Poles, Ukrainians. The cemetery also has graves of German, Polish and Soviet soldiers killed in the fighting in 1944. A stone obelisk with a metal plaque was placed next to a high cross.

This is probably the first memorial site on the Polish lands which mentions Gypsies murdered by the Germans. In July 1979, in the central part of the cemetery, the authorities of the Tryńcza commune erected a granite boulder with a bronze plaque, commemorating the Soviet victims of the camp.

On one of the mass graves, among the “Gypsies” buried there, there is the name of Władysław Siwak, whose body was identified.
