Description of commemoration
The International Memorial to Martyrdom (Victims of Fascism) was unveiled in 1967 at the Birkenau camp. Its structure consists of shaped stone blocks, some possibly anthropomorphic. The monument also includes plaques in various languages. Originally, among the 21 plaques, the sixth plaque from the left had an inscription in Romani. The original text was translated into Romani by Jerzy Ficowski. In 1990, all plaques were replaced due to the verification of data on the number of people murdered in the camp. They were placed on the monument again four years later. The uniform text in the Romani version was developed by Marcel Courthiade, who used standardised spelling.
