Koblenz (memorial)

Historical background

The memorial stone is dedicated to the community of 148 Sinti from Koblenz, who were deported to KL Birkenau in 1943.

The memorial ceremonies, organised on March 10, on the anniversary of the deportation of the Sinti from Koblenz, include guitarist Marlon Reinhardt, whose grandfather, Deweli Reinhardt was one of the deported; and other descendants of Koblenz Roma and Sinti.

Note: the stone is located on the waterfront, near the Moselle River, close to the corner of Peter-Almeier-Ufer and Eltzerhofstraße. We were unable to find it as the directions pointed us towards the cathedral of St. Castor and the so-called German Horn. Therefore, the photos below are taken from external sources and we provide them only for educational purposes.

Description of commemoration

The memorial is in the form of rough stone (from the Maggia valley in Italian Switzerland), about 135 cm high and 90 cm wide. The inscription is placed on a bronze cast in the shape of an unrolled paper / papyrus scroll, with the upper and lower edges rolled up. The inscription is in German only.

Wider das Vergessen // Zum Gedenken an die Sinti und Roma, die hier unter uns lebten.
Männer, Frauen und Kinder – Im Nationalsozialismus wurden sie aus ihrer Heimatstadt Koblenz in die Konzentrationslager deportiert und ermordet.

Translation:

In order not to forget // In memory of the Sinti and Roma who lived here among us. Men, women and children – during National Socialism they were deported from their hometown to a concentration camp and murdered.
