Lohheide – Bergen-Belsen (miniature model)

Historical background

See: Lohheide – Bergen-Belsen (camp)

The Roma and Sinti are also mentioned on the miniature model in KL Bergen-Belsen, located in the place of the female part of the camp. This part of the camp was initially intended for a transition camp for women, but with time it became a place of internment for women, especially from Poland and Hungary, for Jewish women, but also for Polish women brought here after the Warsaw Uprising. From December 1944, Germans also began using this part of the camp to imprison other victims: more than 10,000 women and children labelled as political prisoners, Jews, as well as the Roma and Sinti who arrived in death marches and transports from various directions. As a result, the female part of the camp was expanded in January 1945.

Description of commemoration

We mention the miniature model because it separately lists the Gypsy transports, actually – the groups of the Roma and Sinti women who were transported to the women’s camp in Bergen-Belsen. It is not strictly a separate commemoration, directing attention specifically to the Gypsies, and it definitely is not considered a part of the main memorial.
