Historical background

See: Oldenburg (memorial)

Description of commemoration

The road sign informs that the street we are on is called “Mechau Family”. The Mechau family lived in Ziegelhofes at Friedhofsweg in Oldenburg. Giving the street their name is a way of commemorating 22 people, the closest relatives of Augusta and Otta Mechau, who were arrested on 3 March 1943 and then deported from the slaughterhouse building in Oldenburg to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. Between 1943 and 1945, they were all murdered there.
