Pirmasens (plaque)

Historical background

Gypsy children named Anna and Robert Reinhardt lived in the Nardinihaus orphanage in Pirmasens for seven years, until 1943, when they were deported to KL Auschwitz, where they were murdered, just like their parents.

In the hall of the main entrance from Klosterstraße there are three plaques commemorating people and events related to World War II and related to the history of this place – the monastery-run orphanage in Pirmasens. First, on the right, there is a stone plaque dedicated to the history of the building, the so-called Nadrinihaus (‘Nardini House’) – from the name of Paul Josef Nardini, philosopher and theologian, founder of the Congregation of the Poor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family, carers at the local home.

On the left side there are two bronze plaques: the upper one, commemorating the bombing raid in March 1945, during which 30 people were killed, and the lower one, which commemorates the Gypsies.

Description of commemoration

This is a bronze plaque on which a dedication was written for two children from the Sinti family Reinhardt. The background of the plaque is slightly rough, letters are raised, the frame of the plaque is narrow with a small cutter. The text on the plaque is in German.

A foundry mark (letter A or Λ) is located in the lower right hand corner the plaque.
