Čierny Balog – Vydrovo
Historical background
In November 1944, the Germans captured some Olas Roma from the village of Neresnice (today part of Zvolen) in a forest. After several days of detention in a local school, on November 14 they killed men in the hamlet of Vydrovo (southern part of Čierny Balog). On the same day, they led women and children to the upper part of the Jergovska Valley (northern part of the village), where they locked them in a hut and set them on fire. Another group of Gypsy men were shot in the Štrbavô Valley and an entire settlement in the Pusté part was burned. Over 60 people were killed.
Description of commemoration
A small concrete memorial with a black stone slab, unveiled in 1969 (!). NOTE! In 2016, we found the memorial almost completely obscured by a nature trail information board and thus almost invisible from the road!
