Darmstadt (memorial, Grosse Bachgasse)
Description of commemoration
The memorial was erected in a place where the largest group of Gypsy craftsmen and workers lived before the war. It is made of Corten steel and resembles a wedge. On one side there are panels resembling dark, obscured or permanently blanked windows, and each of them is signed with the name: Sophie Gärtner, Elizabeth Lehmann, Martin Wick, Alwine Keck. At the top of the memorial, designers cite the history of the Roma and Sinti from Darmstadt. On the other side of the monument, the one closer to Justus Liebig’s house – there are only two “windows”. They are made of white stone slab and symbolise the present. In addition to the inscriptions (only in German) on the monument, the entire installation also includes a small brass plaque in the right corner of the pavement, informing that the monument is located on the 1939-45 Historical Route of the City of Darmstadt.

Here, in the former Brandgasse and other streets of the old city, many Sinti families had lived until March 1943. Pursuant to the Auschwitz Decree (Auschwitz-Erlass) almost all the Sinti from Darmstädt were deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp due to their ethnicity. After the last selection on August 2, 1944, the majority of them were murdered on the night of August 2 and 3, 1944.
