Lutowiska
Historical background
In June 1941, the village of Lutowiska was occupied by the Germans. In June 1942, the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police brought about 650 Jews, Poles and Gypsies to the area close to the church of St. Stanislaus in Lutowiska. It took all night for the Gestapo officers who came from Ustrzyki Dolne – Johann Bakcer and Arnold Doppke as well as Ukrainian policemen to shoot all the victims.
Description of commemoration
Next to the parish church in Lutowiska there is a simple memorial, consisting of larger and smaller stones, reminiscent of the small walls that surrounded old church or Orthodox church cemeteries, typical for this area (in the Bieszczady Mountains). The main stone can symbolise a tombstone or resistance against the occupying forces…
The memorial is dedicated to the victims of the German occupation. It was laid to mark the place of execution and burial of 650 people – Polish citizens: Catholics, Jews, and Gypsies.
Initially, there was one plaque on the memorial, indicating that it was erected to commemorate 650 victims. Around the year 2011, the old plaque was replaced without changing its contents, and a second plaque was added, the content of which is given below.
