Description of commemoration
In 2007, Gunter Demnig, a German artist, chose the site of the Salzburg-Maxglan camp as a location to place 268 Stolpersteine, i.e. concrete cubes with brass plates inscribed with names of Nazi extermination, inserted in the pavement or in this case – on the side of the road. In 2007, at the corner of Glan-Treppelweg and Schwarzgrabenweg Streets, diagonally from the monument, 17 cubes with tiles were placed to commemorate the children aged one to four years, born in the Maxglan camp, deported and killed in Auschwitz. Two years later, in 2009, two more tiles were added to this number – one dedicated to Sonia Herzenberger, born in Auschwitz on April 17, 1943 and murdered there on April 30, 1943. The second one adds Aloisia Wolf, a 14-year-old Sinti girl, who “lived here” (in Salzburg) and was murdered in Auschwitz.
